Overview

David Swallow, Jr. (Wowita Uha Mani) is a member of Crazy Horse's band of Teton Lakota. He is a Wicasa Wakan (holy man), intercessor of the Medicine Wheel Sun Dance, and the Head Man of Porcupine, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where he lives. Mr. Swallow is also a leader in the original Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires, traditional leadership of the Lakota Oyate), educated by his grandparents and other elders in Lakota history, culture, and spiritual, ceremonial, ecological, and star knowledge. As a veteran AIM (American Indian Movement) member, he has participated in major acts of resistance, including the 1973 Wounded Knee Occupation and the Water Protectors Defensive Action at Standing Rock in 2016. Now an elder linking past with future, Mr. Swallow speaks to audiences across the US and around the world about Lakota lands, spiritual ceremonies, history, culture, and contemporary issues.
